*When I Work is a remote first company.  While we have an office in Minneapolis, we are considering this a nationwide search.  Due to the pandemic, our entire staff is remote for now.  However, if an onsite location is important to you in your search, you are welcome to work from our Minneapolis HQ once our offices re-open.  

As an Engineering Manager, you will be guiding, coaching, and leading a technical team that is building a product that hundreds of thousands of hourly employees and managers use everyday to work better together. You possess both a passion for technology and desire to rally a team towards a common goal. You enjoy making sure all the trains run on time, any roadblocks are cleared, and are constantly looking for ways to make the team and how they deliver products more efficient and predictable. You like spending your time leading a team, relying on their technical input, and watching them produce code and products that are greater than the sum of their parts. 

What You’ll Be Doing 

You will work on everything from recruiting top talent to career development plans, from proactive product initiatives to reactive product issues, from helping a Product Manager get code shipped to helping Support get bugs in the pipeline to be fixed. Sometimes all on the same day.  

  • Establish focus and execution of the team to build new features. Analyze (and react to) results discovered from our system services and user feedback. Raise risks when needed.
  • Measure the level of efforts for feature development against the value delivered. 
  • Evaluate and build engineering processes that help the team run efficiently.
  • Ensure engineering resources are adequately allocated to accurately reflect timeline deliverables and shipping dates for releases.
  • Coach and provide feedback to improve individual and team performance.
  • Help manage employee concerns and issues.
  • Participate in annual employee performance reviews.
  • Help define and participate in the hiring and recruitment process.
  • Train and mentor new hires and established team members.

Experience and Skills Needed

  • 2+ years experience managing software development teams in a matrix organization
  • Strong technical aptitude with experience shipping code
  • Experience running the day to day operations of an agile engineering team. Knowledge and experience in the basics of agile (backlogs, estimation, progress updates and retrospectives).
  • Experience in Jira, GitLab, & Automated Testing
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and use independent judgement.  
  • Able to efficiently manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time
  • Collaborative and team oriented
  • Possesses a positive, can-do attitude

What Would Be Awesome To Have

  • Experience in any of the following development technologies a plus – native iOS, native Android, Java, PHP, .NET, Golang, React, React Native
  • Agile or Scrum related certifications
  • Statistics / Analytics experience
